FC Bayern München won the reverse fixture 6-1 in Kiel, with Jamal Musiala scoring their third-quickest Bundesliga goal after just 14 seconds. Prior to this season, these two sides had only met once before in professional football. In the second round of the DFB-Pokal in 2020/21, the Storks, then in the second division, won 6-5 on penalties at home (2-2 a.e.t.).
Since promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965, FC Bayern München have won 34 of their 36 home games against Bundesliga debutants, as Holstein Kiel currently are (won their last 21). They have only ever dropped points in such fixtures in January 1967 in a 2-1 loss to Fortuna Düsseldorf and in November 1978 when they drew 1-1 against SV Darmstadt 98.
With 48 points from 19 games, this is FC Bayern München’s best Bundesliga season in nine years, when they had 52 points under Pep Guardiola in 2015/16. In their top-flight history, the Bavarians have only been better off at this stage on three occasions: 50 points in 2005/06, 53 in 2013/14 and 52 in 2015/16.
Holstein Kiel are on 12 points after 19 games – since three points for a win was introduced, the only Bundesliga debutant to claim fewer points from the first 19 matchdays was Greuther Fürth in 2012/13 (9). The Storks are still winless after their first nine away matches (D3, L6) – the last debutant to endure such a long wait for their maiden away victory was Energie Cottbus in 2000/01 (10 games).
FC Bayern München boast both the best attack (58 goals scored) and defence (16 conceded) in the Bundesliga this season, while Holstein Kiel’s defence is the worst (48 goals conceded). Only Bayern themselves have ever bettered their current goal tally after 19 games (61 in 2021/22). The last Bundesliga debutant to concede 48 goals from their opening 19 fixtures was Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin in 1986/87.
