Insights / Post Match

Young Boys have lost each of their eight UEFA Champions League league phase games this season, with that also serving as the Swiss club’s longest ever losing streak across European competition. The hosts also netted just three goals in total, their fewest ever in a group stage/league phase campaign despite playing two more matches this time around.

With their victory tonight, Crvena Zvezda became the first Serbian side to win an away UEFA Champions League game after sides from the country had lost each of their prior 18 matches on the road by a combined 53-8 scoreline.

Before MD8 begun, Young Boys and Crvena Zvezda had both conceded 12 first half goals, the most in the competition, although tonight they played out a goalless opening 45 minutes. It was the first time in the tournament this year that the Serbian side hadn’t conceded a first half strike in a match.

Insights / Pre Match

Young Boys and Crvena Zvezda also met in last season’s UEFA Champions League stage, with the two teams playing out a 2-2 draw in Serbia before the Swiss side won 2-0 at home.

Crvena Zvezda’s only previous away win against Swiss opposition in European competition in nine attempts (D5 L3 – qualifiers included) came against Grasshopper Club Zürich in the 1990-91 European Cup first round (4-1).

Young Boys are one of only two sides – along with Slovan Bratislava – to have lost all seven of their matches in the UEFA Champions League this season. The last campaign to see a team lose more than seven matches was 2002-03, with both Bayer Leverkusen (9) and Lokomotiv Moscow (8) doing so.

After winning two of their first four home UEFA Champions League matches (D1 L1), Young Boys have only won one of their last eight (D1 L6), losing the last three by an aggregate score of 10-1.

Crvena Zvezda have lost their last 13 away matches across the European Cup and UEFA Champions League – no side has ever lost 14 in a row.
