Estadi Municipal de Montilivi - Girona
Girona have won two of their last three matches in all competitions (L1), having been winless in six matches before this (D2 L4).
Slovan Bratislava remain winless in their last seven meetings with Spanish opponents in all European competition (D2 L5), since beating Barcelona 3-2 in the 1969 Cup Winners’ Cup final.
Girona’s Cristhian Stuani (38y 10d) became the second player aged 38+ to take a UEFA Champions League penalty (excluding shootouts) – both players have failed to convert their spot kick (also Luka Modric for Real Madrid against Union Berlin last season, 38y 94d).
This is the first ever meeting between Girona and Slovan Bratislava. The Slovakian side are winless in their last six major European games against Spanish sides (D2 L4) since beating Barcelona 2-1 in the 1969 Cup Winners’ Cup final to lift their only major European prize to date.
The last encounter between a Spanish team and Slovakian team in major European competition was in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League group stage, when Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Club won both games against Slovan Bratislava 2-1 on their way to reaching that season’s final.
Girona have lost both of their games in the UEFA Champions League this season, and could become the first Spanish side to suffer defeats in each of their first three matches in the competition.
Slovan Bratislava have lost each of their last five matches in major European competition, conceding 16 goals and only scoring three times in return in this run. Indeed, since winning their opening two games in the UEFA Conference League last term, they’ve only won one of their last eight (D1 L6).
Girona have scored three own goals in two games in the UEFA Champions League this season, which is already the joint-most ever by a team in a single campaign (also three by Fenerbahçe in 2007-08).
