RB Salzburg are the first side ever to lose eight consecutive home matches in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, with those losses having come by an aggregate score of 21-3.
Atlético de Madrid have won three consecutive away games in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1973-74 campaign (a run of three), with today just the fifth time they’ve scored 4+ goals in an away match and the second time this season (also 6-0 v Sparta Prague in November).
Antoine Griezmann scored just his second away brace for Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (out of nine overall), since one against Galatasaray in September 2015 – he has now scored more braces than any other player not to score a single hat-trick in the competition (9).
RB Salzburg and Atlético de Madrid have met twice previously in all competitions with both coming the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stage; the Spaniards won 3-2 away on MD2 and 2-0 at home on MD6.
Atlético de Madrid have never lost against an Austrian opponent in European competition, winning nine of their 10 such matches to date (D1). They’ve won all four of their games against Austrian sides under Diego Simeone by an aggregate score of 12-2 (all in the UEFA Champions League).
RB Salzburg have lost each of their last seven home matches in the UEFA Champions League, including all three this season without scoring. If they lose this game, they would become the first side in the history of the European Cup/Champions League to lose eight consecutive home matches.
Following wins over Paris SG (2-1) and Sparta Prague (6-0), Atlético de Madrid will be looking to win three consecutive away games in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1973-74 campaign (a run of three).
RB Salzburg have only won their final match of a group/league phase in one previous UEFA Champions League campaign (1-0 v Sevilla in 2021-22), losing each of the five other matches. Indeed, they’ve lost and conceded 3+ goals in their final group game in each of the previous two campaigns (0-4 v Milan and 1-3 v Benfica).
