Southampton vs Arsenal

Southampton have become the first team in Premier League history to lose 30 games in a season, and indeed the first team to lose 30 games in a 38-game top-flight campaign.

Arsenal have finished second for the third consecutive Premier League campaign. It’s the fifth time in top-flight history a team has been runners-up three years in a row, with Arsenal the first side to do so twice (also 1998-99 to 2000-01).

Arsenal haven’t conceded more than twice in any of their 58 games in all competitions this season, just the third time in the Premier League era a side has gone through an entire campaign without conceding 3+ in a match (also Manchester United in 2007-08 and 2017-18).

All eight of Southampton’s Premier League wins against Arsenal have come in home games, most recently in April 2022. It’s the most victories one team has against another in the competition without any coming away from home.

Arsenal have lost just two of their last 16 Premier League games against Southampton (W8 D6), going down in December 2018 (2-3) and April 2022 (0-1).

This is the second time Southampton and Arsenal are meeting on the final day of a Premier League campaign. Saints previously won 3-2 in the final game at the Dell in 2000-01, with the Gunners finishing second for the third season in a row back then.

Having won their final Premier League game in five consecutive seasons between 1998-99 and 2002-03, Southampton have only done so in two of their last 13 top-flight campaigns (D4 L7).

Arsenal haven’t lost their final league game in any of the last 19 seasons (W17 D2) since losing 2-1 at Birmingham in 2004-05. Only Liverpool (24 between 1899-00 and 1926-27) have had a longer run in English league history.
