Stadium of Light - Sunderland
Sunderland have won their first two home games of a Premier League season for only the second time, also doing so in 2001-02 under Peter Reid (this is their 17th season in the competition).
Brentford lost a Premier League game against a newly promoted side for the first time in their last nine such fixtures since losing 2-1 to Burnley in March 2024.
Wilson Isidor’s goal on 95 minutes and 17 seconds was Sunderland’s second-latest winner in the Premier League, after March 2008 against West Ham (95:24)
Sunderland are winless in their last five meetings with Brentford in all competitions (D2 L3), with the first since a 2-0 home loss in the Championship in February 2018.
Sunderland vs Brentford will be the 940th different fixture to have been played in the Premier League. They last faced in the top-flight in the 1946-47 campaign, with the Black Cats winning 3-0 away and 2-1 at home.
In their previous 16 Premier League campaigns, only once have Sunderland won their first two home matches in a season, winning their opening two at the Stadium of Light in 2001-02 under Peter Reid.
Despite losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest on MD1, no team have won more away Premier League points than Brentford in 2025 (23 – W7 D2 L2). It’s already more away points than they managed in 2022 (22), 2023 (19) and 2024 (12) and is their joint most away top-flight wins in one year, also winning seven in 1937.
Sunderland completed 530 passes against Burnley in their last game, their most ever in a Premier League match on record (since 2005-06). Granit Xhaka completed 93 of those – 14 more than any other Black Cats player in a top-flight match Opta has on record.
